What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurobiological condition that is characterized by inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. The symptoms begin in childhood and are life long in up to 65% of people.

Untreated ADHD can lead to problems with work, school, and reationships. It is now known that adults with untreated ADHD have more frequent divorces, job changes, substance abuse and automobile accidents than other adults.

Recognizing ADHD in adults may be difficult. Creative coping stradegies help hide their dificulties. Also, the symptoms of ADHD typically changes as the child becomes an adult.

Inattention
Doesn't seem to listen when spoken to or complete schoolwork.

Easily distracted if cored but can hyperfocus on tasks of interest; problems finishing work.

Hyperactivity
Can't sit still, always on the go.

Restlessness
Can't calm thoughts enough to focus; impatient; need for high energy activity.

Physical Impulsivity
Problem waiting one's turn; enjoys high risk activities.

Verbal Impulsivity
Interrupts; finishes sentences for others; may say the "wrong thing".
